No you weren't imagining things: our water isn't right. New Jersey American Water confirmed on the evening of December 18th that they were investigating the reports of an unusual taste and odor that many Bridgewater residents are experiencing. Subsequent updates from the company have reported they are working with the state Department of Environmental Protection and that samples show that 'the water meets state and federal standards'.

Local residents have reported that the water has a chemical taste or smell, similar to acetone or paint thinner. People with sensitive skin have experienced itchy rashes after showering. Rumors swirl online that the cause was illegal dumping of industrial waste.

NJAM has not revealed what the source of the taste and odor is or if they've even identified it. Has the water supply been contaminated? Was there a malfunction in the treatment process? Is the water really safe to bathe and shower in? Is it safe to cook with and drink?

With all these questions still swirling, where are Bridgewater's elected officials? They were quick to jump on the bandwagon of drone hysteria but when it comes to the safety of our water supply, there is a deafening silence. As of the time of this publishing, there have been no updates from our local officials, no confirmation that our officials have been in contact with the water company or NJ DEP, and no reassurance that the water is safe.

This unfortunately seems to be par for the course. NJAM has had multiple system failures recently leading to boil water advisories and even complete water service loss. Our elected officials appear uninterested in holding NJAM to account for the substandard service we have experienced.
